I used to love these pecils I thought they were the best but now they make them so cheap they broke the first time I used them ALL 3! They also feel less sturdy and charge even more. I had to throw all three away as nothing I did would get them to work more then once before clicking for more lead. I don’t know if I got a defective pack or what but this NEVER happend before and I have been buying these since 2006. NEVER buying again I might as well burn 8$ infront of my eyes.

Randomly Works, Randomly Doesn’t
When I first bought these they seemed okay, but then in the middle of a math test the pencil stopped working. Thankfully I had a different brand pencil. The pencils continue to randomly work or not work. The tip breaks often, and sometimes spins while I write. One of my classmates bought the same pencils and he has the same complaints.

I have been buying these particular pencils for probably half a decade now, they lasted a long time until some of the plastic parts wore off or broke off and they started to get the the point of needing to be replaced. I’m not saying that they were perfect- the cap needed a better mechanism to stay on, the rubber at the end has worn off on me before. All I’m saying is that nothing else worked better at this price point. However, at some point in the past year Paper Mate decided to redesign these. And I’m not opposed to that, but within just a few strokes of using these new pencils the lead breaks. No matter if you use light pressure or hold it at the right angle. if you do something wrong the lead breaks. I noticed that these pencils were slightly different than the ones that I had bought before. You can see in the photos how they change the cap and the logo on the pencil but it is almost identical. I did manage to figure out the problem… the lead wiggles just a little bit at the end of the pencil, it’s very hard to see, but it is just enough that the lead will break if it catches on something, like when you try to write with it. there is play in the metal tip so that when you are writing with it the friction on the paper creates enough leverage to break the lead. In the redesign, Paper mate forgot to actually make these pencils work like pencils. they’re frustrating to work with and are a complete waste of your money. Do not buy them! TL;DR: Pencil lead has too much play at the end of the tip so that the lead breaks VERY easily when you use it. It didn’t do this before they redesigned it. Do NOT waste your money on them.

Lead mechanism malfunction
I have bought these mechanical pencils on numerous occasions, for some reason they break when I attempt to load more lead. The mechanism to push the lead out stops working, the button you click doesn’t work anymore and it doesn’t push the lead out. I’m uncertain as to why, I put one piece of lead in at a time, and it just stops working- which is really frustrating. I have 3 pencils that are fairly new that I am unable to use now. I really like the comfort of these pencils, and the length of the eraser- obviously just not if I can’t use it.

Bad design
I love a good pencil, but this is not it. The button for dispensing the led being in the middle means it sometimes gets clicked accidentally while writing, and then the led snaps off or the metal piece at the tip retracts and the led snaps off. Happens too much and makes writing a pain, especially if rushing through a timed test.

Pencils all malfunctionand have to be tossed out
I really liked the way these pencils write, but for about the last year they all stop working with a few weeks of use. I’ve bought this product two different times (at least 6 months apart) and each time the pencils quit working at the part where you push the button to get more lead out. It won’t click all the way and no lead is fed to the tip of the pencil. I’ve taken the pencils apart to troubleshoot, put new 0.5 lead in, but nothing fixes the issue and I have to throw the pencils away once they do this. Due to this happening with all of the pencils, even though they were bought months apart, it seems to be a product issue and not a fluke or a bad batch.

The comfort grip is quite nice and bulky. But I cannot get the eraser to stay in place which drives me mad. Every time I press on the eraser, it retracts making it utterly worthless.

I was excited about these pencils because the lead is advanced from the side and they came with extra erasers and lead. However, the erasers are terrible!! No matter how high or low the eraser is, every time it’s used, it ends up twisting back into the pencil. Of course I threw away the package and can’t return them now. What a waste of money!

Stops working after first piece of lead – refill lead won’t advance
These are very popular and we love them for the first stick of lead – however, we have never been able to get a refill to work in this pencil and as a previous reviewer mentioned the advancement of the lead often gets stuck and discontinues working. These are very expensive mechanical pencils to not be able to get refill lead to work. I don’t recommend.

Colors are not correct
These are my favorite mechanical pencils to use I’ve used them sense 6th or 7th grade. But I ordered these for my best friend and they did not come in the colors in showed it came with an ugly dark green color one and 2 dark blue ones.

Miss the old pencil
I used to use these pencils throughout my early years of high school, they were very durable and provide nice support and I appreciated the extra led and eraser inclusion. I bought them again for the 2019-2020 school year and realized that they had changed the pencil design, not only does it inhibit the full use of the provided eraser (the old model allowed for the whole eraser to twist all the way up), but I often find that the clicker on the side of the pencil often gets stuck and will not allow for the protrusion of the lead. There is much to be desired in the new design. The old model, in my opinion, was better.

I have used a Papermate mechanical pencil for years, and thought I would try something new. Especially for the price, (3/$5, as I remember), these can’t be beat. I prefer Papermate’s method of advancing the lead by just pushing down on the top section, but the side-click feature on these Pentels is “OK”. You really don’t have to advance the lead enough to make the difference matter.
I also LOVE the soft white erasers! Everything about it works well ~ I even shared one with my wife.

Our favorite mechanical pencil!!
Between myself and my elementary school boys (currently 2nd & 5th grades), these are by far our most favorite mechanical pencil. We all have them and I have them scattered around the house. We prefer the 0.5mm lead size and the colors blue, green & purple. I can never find these 0.5mm pencils in stock at the store (if lucky enough to find any, I find pink and purple), so when I saw these online of the right lead size, right color and awesome price, a happy dance happened! At six dollars online, I ordered 6 packages! They write so smooth and effortlessly and the lead is nice a dark. They’re also very comfortable to write with. As mentioned by another reviewer, you need to learn how to hold the eraser twister while you erase to prevent it from moving (super easy to learn). The only thing we don’t like about these pencils is that the pocket clip breaks easily. Not a huge deal, as the pencil still works perfectly fine.

Love, THE only mechanical pencils I use. I love that this pack comes with three different colors versus the average blue and black you see everywhere else. The eraser you learn to hold correctly so that it works properly and the eraser is actually good. No matter what size these pencils are awesome but I like .5mm because my writing looks so much neater. Got two packs buy 1 get 1 half off because pencils tend to disappear through the year.

eraser sinks into pencil barrel while trying to erase
needed a high quality 0.5 mm mechanical pencil with good ‘white’ eraser. The twist-up eraser advances the eraser, but the slightest erasing motion causes the eraser to sink back into the holder thus not erasing. Very frustrating. The pencil writes fine and has a good grip.
