Praise for The Writing Revolution 2.0
“For years, I have recommended The Writing Revolution for the following reasons: powerful sequencing from sentence to composition, skills broken down into obtainable chunks, explicit, systematic instruction, writing assignments connected to class content, and focus on planning and revising. Teachers are supported and students emerge as writers. The Writing Revolution truly makes a difference, so schools, teachers, and students should follow this roadmap to excellence.”
―Anita Archer, author of Explicit Instruction: Effective and Efficient Teaching
“The impact of The Writing Revolution, which has expanded our understanding of how writing builds knowledge and taught us how to embed great writing lessons into daily instruction across content areas, has been profound. When Judith Hochman, Natalie Wexler, and Kathleen Maloney think there’s more to say about how we produce strong writers, educators need to stop and listen. Drawing on thousands of hours of onsite work with teachers, The Writing Revolution 2.0 is a testament to the authors’ belief that good writing instruction is within the grasp of all teachers and that, indeed, it must be their charge.”
―Barbara Davidson, president of StandardsWork, Inc. and executive director of the Knowledge Matters Campaign
“We’ve been inspired by the practical approach of the Hochman Method for over three decades and so have the many teachers we’ve shared it with. We couldn’t be happier about this second edition since the practices laid out so clearly in this book will make every student exposed to them a more supple and lucid writer.”
―David and Meredith Liben, Reading Done Right, authors of Know Better Do Better: Comprehension
“This guide needs to be on every educator’s bookshelf! Grounded in The Writing Revolution‘s research on writing instruction, this supremely practical book provides teachers, administrators, and other practitioners with a robust guide for building students’ writing ability and knowledge. This book is the best tool a teacher can keep in their toolkit.”
―Esther Klein Friedman, Ph.D., executive director of Literacy and Academic Intervention (ret.), NYC Dept. of Educ.; literacy learning specialist
“As a principal, it was clear that students in my elementary school needed an organized system of instruction to improve their writing. My team of teachers fully embraced the Hochman Method and enjoyed collaboratively learning and planning writing lessons using the multiple resources provided in The Writing Revolution. Every principal and teacher should make it a priority to utilize the latest edition to advance their knowledge and understanding of how to effectively teach writing. Your students will develop a love of writing that will last a lifetime.”
―Gwendolyn Payton, instructional superintendent, DCPS
“The Writing Revolution 2.0 provides teachers with powerful strategies to embed explicit writing instruction into the content of the curriculum. These strategies equip children with the tools they need to be confident writers while also developing their comprehension and critical thinking skills.”
―Lori D’Andrea, literacy specialist, Greenburgh Central School District
“For many Australian teachers, The Writing Revolution has, like no other resource, raised their knowledge and provided educators with the tools they need. I observe the impact of this instruction on the quality of writing produced by students in settings ranging from remote communities to large metropolitan areas.”
―Dr. Lorraine Hammond, AM, professional learning and instructional coach, associate professor at Elizabeth Cowan University, School of Education, Australia
“The first edition of The Writing Revolution was a landmark publication. Not only was it packed with brilliant classroom techniques, its focus on sentence level activities changed the way many people thought about teaching writing. The second edition has even more examples taken from the extensive work the authors have done in so many schools and includes important updates about assessment and comparative judgement. It is a must-read for anyone involved with teaching writing.”
―Daisy Christodoulou, director of education, No More Marking
“The Writing Revolution transformed my thinking about the power of writing and how it can improve outcomes for students in all content areas. As a former STEM teacher and school and system leader, I am grateful that the authors have brought the science of writing so effectively to classrooms.”
―Jean-Claude Brizard, president and CEO, Digital Promise Global
“Teachers, district leaders, superintendents, and stakeholders―anyone who wishes to witness the transformative power of content-embedded explicit writing instruction―will benefit exponentially from The Writing Revolution 2.0. When it’s fully embraced and taught campus-wide, even the hardest-to-reach subgroups succeed, prosper, and excel, acquiring the tools and strategies they need to write well!”
―Serena White, interim superintendent of Monroe City Schools
“Simple and brilliant. Practical and insightful. The Writing Revolution 2.0 is canon in how to teach the structures of writing while enabling students to express their individual identities.”
―Anthony Cosentino Jr., principal, Public School 21 – The Margaret P. Emery Elm Park School

As a first year, third grade teacher, trying to wrap my head around teaching 8/9 year olds how to write quality work was daunting. But TWR gives great techniques and strategies to get students OF ALL AGES writing! I will never not use TWR in my classroom!

This book is fantastic and I highly HIGHLY recommend the courses that are available through their website. As a literacy teacher this is amazing, but this year I’m teaching math and WOW the STEM resources are incredible. You really can figure out ways to incorporate writing in the math class that feels natural and I can’t wait to see how my students grow and are able to organize their thinking. Think about how much tests are now asking our students to READ in math and then how much they need to WRITE about their thinking. So often kids can’t explain to me, and this book (The Hochman Method) breaks it down step by step, showing me how to support all my learners. I have taken 3 courses now and they are all valuable, but by FAR the STEM course was amazing and really shows how we all need to take on literacy development for our students, not leaving it to the ELA teachers. This book and the courses and the online resources library are amazing and transformational!

This is hands down the best education book I have ever read. Most education books are full of high level fluff on the Macro level. Build a bond with students have rigor but the fail to explain how to get the skills on the basic micro level. The book gives a good overview on why the book works and then it gives at least a dozen different activities on how help students with their writting. Things such as sentence starters out of order words find the fragment fix the grammer sentence etc. This books is great for all ages and abilities.

I’ve been teaching middle school ELA for 7 years. Teaching essay-writing is always a struggle for students and for me. My district has followed a certain writing program for the last 10 or so years, with varying degrees of success. My area has a high population of English language learners, so this is a factor to consider when planning writing lessons.I really appreciate the early chapters on explicitly teaching concepts such as complete sentences vs. fragments and sentence expansion. I do see the value in the single-paragraph and multi-paragraph outlines. However, this is not sufficient for the planning process for secondary grades. Out of the whole book, there was only about a page dedicated to teaching students how to use evidence and cite sources correctly, when this is one of the big struggles with teaching writing to middle schoolers. The SPO and MPO do not adequately address separating students’ own elaboration from their sources, in my opinion. I was hoping for tips that are simpler than some of the very complicated planning sheets we are currently teaching students, but not quite this simple. All in all, this book is a great resource when it comes to teaching the foundational writing skills that are so lacking in many upper grade students, and there are also many valuable resources when it comes to differentiating. I did appreciate that elementary and secondary grades were addressed in every section of the book, with plenty of examples. This will be helpful in supplementing my current lesson plans and writing curriculum.

Excellent Teaching Resource for Most Year Levels.
The techniques are very practical, student friendly and I have used this text for teaching Year 7 Film Podcasts, Year 8 Response paragraphs to the novel, Year 9 Public Essay (Internet article) on Fantasy and as preparation for the Year 10 Analytical Essay in response to the novel. A copy of this text should be used in every school!

Focused ideas on teaching better writing skills
This book is an eye opener to discover why some students are having difficulty improving their writing. It is a hard skill to teach since there are many skills to build at the same time. I have gained new insight and ideas. The focus though is for students in junior grades and above.

Don’t hesitate – DEFINITELY GET IT!
***This is my first Amazon review, as I don’t usually write them, so let it be a testament to how excellent TWR 2.0 is***As a teacher of students with high literacy needs, the 1st ed. of TWR was already a godsend! It empowered me with the skills to integrate writing instruction alongside the intense demands of the secondary curriculum. It not only transformed my students’ writing development but also how they saw themselves as learners—I am forever grateful to TWR.Given how ‘revolutionary’ (pun intended) the 1st ed. was, I questioned what the 2nd ed. could offer. However, just from flicking through, it’s clear that this new release is far from simply an extension of the 1st ed. TWR literally JUMPS from the page in this technicolour edition filled with student examples and teacher tips.Calling this a ‘2nd ed.’ does an injustice to what the new release truly provides: the Hochman Method remastered. Not only has the sequence been reorganised, but there are NEW STRATEGIES to scaffold students’ writing development further. To any school or educator utilising TWR, this new release is ESSENTIAL to ensure the method’s full potential can come to fruition.
