BURY YOUR SECRET OR DIE FOR IT.
17-year-old Quell has lived her entire life on the run. She and her mother have fled from city to city in order to hide the deadly magic that flows through Quell’s veins.
Until someone discovers her dark secret.
To hide from the assassin hunting her and keep her mother out of harm’s way, Quell reluctantly inducts into a debutante society of magical social elites called the Order that she never knew existed. If she can pass their three rites of membership, mastering their proper form of magic, she’ll be able to secretly bury her forbidden magic forever.
If caught, she will be killed.
But becoming the perfect debutante is a lot harder than Quell imagined, especially when there’s more than tutoring happening with Jordan, her brooding mentor and assassin-in-training.
When Quell uncovers the deadly lengths the Order will go to defend its wealth and power, she’s forced to choose: Embrace the dark magic she’s been running from her entire life, or risk losing everything, and everyone, she’s grown to love.
Still, she fears the most formidable monster she’ll have to face is the one inside.
Brimming with ballgowns and betrayal, magic and mystery, decadence and darkness, House of Marionne is perfect for readers who crave morally gray characters, irresistible romance, dark academia, and a deeply intoxicating and original world.

Alluring. Dark. Thrilling. House of Marionne was stunning, elegant and magical. Full of glitz and glamor. Heart pounding. It was Gilmore Girls meets Harry Potter mixed with the magic of Rachel Griffin’s books. It had The Princess Diaries vibes and the nostalgia of The Mortal Instruments series. It was everything I had hoped it would be, and more!It was a fiery story about a brave young woman trying to cage the wild in her because of fear and society’s expectations. It was about finding her true self and reflecting inward, deciding whether to embrace her darkness, while navigating the dangerous, exciting new world she’d entered. And, it was about the feeling of home, family, friendship, and young love.Daring. Spectacular. Passionate. J. Elle crafted a beautifully unique world, dynamic characters, and a story worth falling for!

I just finished House of Marionne by @authorjelle ? I really enjoyed reading this. J. Elle created a young adult book that includes fantasy, magic, and romance (but not too much). The female main character Quell, has a dark magic within her and has been on the run with her mother. The dark magic within her has made her a target and in order to protect herself, Quell has to make the choice to find her grandmother (House of Marionne). Quell is thrown into a world of high magic and must learn to adapt in this new place while trying to overcome her own dark magic? This is the first magic related book that I really enjoyed reading (besides Harry Potter). I loved Quell and seeing her change as a character throughout the book. She went from being scared of her dark magic to learning to control it and embrace it. I was honored to receive an arc of Shadows of Perl and I cannot wait to dive into that book next☺️

This had a lot of potential but didn’t quite get there for me. The plot and the magic system were pretty good, loved the boarding school aspect. But the characters were a little bland and fell flat for me. A little more work on them would have bumped my rating up

This was so good. Quell is thrown into a world to hone her magic after hiding her true magic for her whole life. Figuring out how to keep the toushana under control and hidden by herself is much harder than she expected. But when she realizes that she may not be alone, secrets begin to unfold.Jordan is her mentor and the ward of her grandmother at House Marionne. He helps her learn about her magic and guide it to hone into a weapon of both mind and body. But what if there’s more? More magic….more….just, more. But Jordan is a Dragun, working for the very people who seek out her kind and kill without question.Secrets continue to unravel and Quell fights her way through the rites, planning for her own Cotillion. But will they make it? It seems that there are plans underway that she begins to figure out, just as it may be too late to stop them. And of course, our Dragun hunting Quell….I was shocked at his identity, but it also made so much sense. The twist at the end has me jumping into book 2!

House of Marionne is about Quell who has been on the run since she was five. When her past finally catches up to her she goes to the only other place she knows, which can be where she has the most at risk. The book was really good. I liked the world building. It kept me engaged the whole time. I am looking forward to the next book.

Quell Marionne, her entire life all she has known is being on the run with her mother until one day she stumbles on hunters “Dragun”. They are searching for magic user with Toushana (dark magic), and that’s exactly what Quell must hide about herself. On the run she must split up from her mother and the only place she can think of going is to her grandmom, at House of Marionne. She decides she must learn to use her magic in order to be reunited with her mother, so she must hide her Toushana and play by the rules. Jordan, a Dragun in training, is her partner but can she trust him? Or her feelings for him? Will her newfound friends be able to help her? Why did her mother leave this place of such luxury to be on the run anyways? She needs to search for the answers and navigate the world of the wealthy magic elite, but will she be strong enough?“House of Marionne” by J. Elle is one of the greatest book I’ve ever read. I’m still reeling from the last half of the book. The characters are so perfect, and the world sucked me in right away. I want to live in this universe she wrote and cannot wait for the second book. I gave it a 5 out of 5 stars but I wished I could give it more. This will be forever one of my favorite books. It’s YA so there’s not any spice but the slow burn is so good. Quell was relatable and I support her decisions one hundred percent. I just could not get enough of the book and everything in it. Every single thing was absolutely perfect.

The idea is good! the writing fine too, definitely better than what I could come up with lol, but the whole thing should have been 1/2-3/4 as long. It started to drone on and on to the point where Quell became insufferable (she’s long suffering, that one) and all the movement happens in the last 1/4 of the book. I think a lot of the pomp should have been cut. Great twists at the end!

A story of a girl with dark magic is hidden by her mother. One day she is chased by dark magic hunters and they chase her right to her grandma’s house. Her house ends up being a debutant/Elitist Magical training camp. The MC goes through 3 tasks involving magic and etiquette. The main passes until the end where her dark magic comes out and ruins everything. Oh and she falls in love with her bodyguard.Overall, this wasn’t good or bad. It was just Meh. It builds as a first book would and the last 100 pages just drag and do nothing for the book.Young Adult/12+Spice: 0

Fantasia, romance e intriga muy bien mezclados en una historia juvenil
4,5/5 starsI recently signed up for the House of Marionne read along organised by Penguin Teen and I have to say that I liked the book more than I expected.Quell, the main character, has been travelling from one side of the country to the other with her mother, fleeing from people who want to kill her because of a dark power she has had inside her since she was a child. Her mother doesn’t want to tell her anything, but there comes a time when her path crosses with that of her grandmother, leader of House Marionne, who will instruct her in the world of magic and which Quell will use to get rid of the power that terrifies her so much. What I liked most about the story is that the chapters are not very long and are easy to read. English is not my mother tongue and despite having new vocabulary (which is not used on a daily basis) I understood everything perfectly. I also liked how the theme of the different Houses was organised, which fight for a common good (protecting magic) but deep down each one has its own interests. And finally, the different types of magic. The story is told mainly from Quell’s point of view, but it contains some chapters told from the point of view of her pursuer. As for the main characters, Quell is the one who evolves the most. She starts out knowing almost nothing about magic and when she enters her grandmother’s school she discovers a totally new world for her, full of dances, etiquette, rules in the purest Bridgerton style. A different society where what prevails is magic, power and the connections that can be made. Quell goes from being afraid and bowing her head to showing that she can choose her own path. On the other hand, Jordan does not evolve much in this first book, beyond her relationship with Quell. Even so, I have really enjoyed those moments they share together, both the tensions at the beginning, and the romance later on.House of Marionne is a young adult contemporary fantasy book, where there is no shortage of romance, intrigue, betrayals and secrets. A story that I highly recommend.
